Soap was supposed to be a British invention and there would have been no shortage of wood ash and animal fat. The soap was used primarily as a cosmetic, a shampoo to make the hair shine. It was the habit of most pre-Roman British women to have ‘bottle blond’ hair, bleaching their hair with wood ash lye.
